First,
a little bit of history...
As the French explored and settled
along the Mississippi River during the late 1600's and early
1700's they brought with them a wedding tradition called
Charivari (cha re va re). The English
speaking pioneers who followed and settled west of the Mississippi
adopted the tradition. But finding the French term difficult
to pronounce, they called the tradition Shivaree.
Custom had it that after a wedding,
the family and friends of the newlyweds would form a Shivaree
party and follow the couple to where they were spending
their wedding night. All in good fun, the Shivaree party
would bang on pots and pans and noisily serenade the couple
interrupting their plans for the evening. Finally, the embarrassed
groom and blushing bride would appear and treat the Shivaree
to food and drink. |

Although you can
still find an occasional Shivaree today, the custom has
faded to tying tin cans behind the wedding car.
When we searched for a name for our
hat, Shivaree was the perfect choice. The hats
are of western style and merrily announce a wedding. |
Our brides have chosen to
wear their hats to many events prior to and following
the wedding. Not necessarily designed to wear for
the walk down the aisle (but certainly elegant enough
to do so), some brides wear their Shivaree
hat at their reception.
Featured here are pictures
of Lisa who wore her hat to her bachelorette party,
line-dancing, rehearsal, and reception.
Engagement party, shower, gift
opening party, and the honeymoon are perfect occasions
for a Shivaree hat. |

Shivaree hats are
elegantly designed and customized for each bride.
Satin cord and ribbon (in wedding or collegiate colors),
Chantilly lace and beaded fringe are some of the lovely
veil trims available. The veil is carefully handsewn
to the hat and later can easily be removed if desired.
An exclusively designed Shivaree heart concho that
adorns the bow is available in bronze, sterling silver
or gold. Each Shivaree hat comes in a lovely hatbox.
Coordinating hats, minus the
veil, for the bridesmaids and even for the groom are
available. Silver, gold, and specialty trimmed veils
are offered as Shivaree anniversary hats. A Shivaree
hat is the perfect gift from family or friends. And
in addition to a ring, what a unique way to say, "Will
You Marry Me?"
